Malaysia Targets Three Gold Medals

The Chairmain of Malaysian contingent, said that the target was considered realistic because some sports which can contribute gold to malaysia will not competed in the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games.

“On this 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games, we are targeting a gold medal for swimming and wushu. Untill now, only two sports have potentially to contribute the golden medals. If the sport of diving also competed, we are brave to target more golden medals, ” He said as quoted by a media publication in Kuala Lumpur.

However, the target could still be changed after seeing the official list of athletes from other countries. He admitted that he did not know the power of the other contingents, but he is confident with the ability of 136 malaysian athletes who will compete in this event.

We have athletes who have been following the world championships and several other international championships. So, every athlete is selected to have a chance of a medal donate for contingent states. Regardless, it is still too early to say it because some contingents of Central Asia for example Iran is not messing around and they have a world-class athlete.

Malaysia will follow 10 of 13 sports that will be competed such as weight lifting, archery, karate, tennis, badminton, wushu, swimming and taekwondo. The 1st Islamic Solidarity Games was held in Saudi Arabia (2005). At that time, Malaysia was on 7th ranked with 5 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals which obtained from diving, karate and swimming.

The idea to organize Islamic Solidarity Games was sparked during the Islamic Cooperate Organization Summit in Putrajaya-Malaysia, 2003.
