Guyana send a seven-member team to the Islamic Sports
Solidarity Federation (ISSF) Games in Indonesia between September 22 and
October 1 with the Guyana Olympic Association (G.O.A) Head highlighting
the opportunity for athletes’ exposure.
“This is another opportunity to give our athletes some exposure. I am
looking forward to lots of good performances from this team,” G.O.A
Head, K.A. Juman Yassin, told the media yesterday at G.O.A Headquarters where the brief press conference was held.
According to Yassin, the team will be leaving Guyana today and arriving
in Indonesia on Friday to compete in the Games, which starts on Sunday.
Ramjeet Ramphal was named as the Chef-de-Mission and Leslie Black named
Athletics Coach/Manager.
Yassin said that Guyana is the only member of the Islamic group in this
region. “We have been a member for some time now. Don’t ask me how long
we have been a member, because I will not answer you,” Yassin quipped
yesterday.
The team also include Alika Morgan (1500m, 5000m) and Winston George
(200m, 400m) from athletics; Kawall Ramkiran from Taekwondo (Kyorugi
Under-58kg); Nathalie Gibson (Kumite Under-68kg) and Patrick Cheeks
(Kumite Over-84kg) from Karate.
Chef-de-Mission, Ramjeet Ramphal said that he is happy Guyana was
getting the opportunity to expose athletes. He said that he believes
Guyana has a good team and hope that the country will be returning with
lots of medals from the Islamic Games.
